Removing or Changing Your Tassel Year Charms

Tassel Year Charm Changes and Removals

Some people think tassels become “old news” once graduation is over and the year has passed. In reality, the tassel year charm (also called a signet) can be removed and reattached in minutes.

Graduation coordinators - do not let leftover tassels collect dust. Reuse your tassels from year to year and refresh them by replacing only the year charm. It’s faster, cleaner, and helps stretch your inventory budget.

What you’ll do in this guide

  • 1 Remove the existing year charm without damaging the clasp.
  • 2 Optionally keep the tassel in the protective sleeve while you swap the charm.
  • 3 Attach the new year charm and close the clasp securely.

Step 1 - Inspect the tassel and charm

Examine your tassel and year charm to confirm the tassel color and the year on the signet. If you’re here, it’s usually because the year is outdated or incorrect for your next ceremony.

Step 2 - Open the clasp and remove the current charm

Remove the tassel from any packaging. Gently pry open the hook on the clasp using your fingers or a small tool, then slide the current year charm off the loop.

Easy trick

Lift the year charm slightly and gently twist it to the right while holding the clasp firmly. This helps open the small loop so the charm slips off with less force.

Step 3 - Keep the sleeve on (optional)

If you want to keep the tassel in its protective sleeve, secure the loop around a finger and carefully pull the tassel from the bottom opening until the charm area is exposed.

If you are not adding a new charm, close the hook and slide the sleeve back down the tassel. If you are adding a new charm, continue to Step 4.

Step 4 - Add the new year charm

Slide the new signet onto the hook. Make sure the year is facing outward so it displays correctly when worn.

Step 5 - Close the hook securely

Press the hook closed so the charm cannot slip off. If you’re having trouble fully closing the clasp, use a hard surface (like the side of a table) to apply gentle pressure until it shuts.

Coordinator tip: refresh tassel inventory in batches

If you’re updating large quantities, set up a simple workflow: verify color and year first, swap charms in a batch, then do a final clasp check before repackaging. This reduces mis-matched years and speeds up distribution.
