Rebooting Excellence: A Refresher for Educators

At a recent leadership forum, women from the world’s most innovative companies converged on a single theme: Excellence. They applauded it as the single most important catalyst for their productivity, impact and life fulfillment in every arena—home, work, and community.

As the school year intensifies, "excellence" might sound like just another weight for us. But what if we reframe it? Instead of a burden, perhaps excellence can be the very thing that saves us.

Excellence as a Catalyst

For school leaders and teachers, excellence isn't an equation; it’s the intentional pursuit of something meaningful and motivating. This focus shifts us from survival mode into high gear, moving us past mundane tasks toward a high-impact vision with tangible goals and daily habits to achieve them.

For Administrators: Excellence might mean "Mindful Leadership," turning deep listening into a superpower to level up school effectiveness.

For Teachers: Excellence is found in "Micro-Innovations"—tweaking a lesson for a struggling student or fostering a culture where every child feels seen.

These are just quick examples, but you get the idea: excellence can mean anything you want it to mean. As long as it’s personal and meaningful, it will be highly motivating and likely quite powerful for you and for others.

The Energy of Meaning

Why pursue excellence when you’re exhausted? Because meaning is energizing. When we commit to something larger than the daily grind, we reignite our "why." We move from "I have to" to "I want to." This shift unleashes a creative force and a genuine joy that is highly contagious to you and to everyone around you.

Resetting Your Vision

Great athletes aren't just consistently great; they are great at being consistent. To pursue excellence, realign your habits with a fresh vision:

  • Step Off the Train: Pause and imagine your "best self." Create a clear vision of the impact you want to have and yourself having that impact.
  • Amplify, Don’t Just Fix: Instead of draining energy on what’s broken, spend time amplifying what is already working. Win with the winners.
  • Prioritize Small Wins: Excellence is a marathon of 1% shifts—a more concise meeting, a warmer morning greeting, or a better grading system. It’s not one big move, it’s many small moves and skills that aggregate over a long time.

Start Today

You might need a bigger budget or more hours or more people - we get it. That really would help us all. But there is no reason you cannot start now with these very simple steps.

  • The Power of One: Improve just one specific area—like a morning routine—by just 5% this month. A small thing that you can make a bit better each week.
  • The Friday Reflection: Spend 15 minutes asking: What made me proud this week? What did I crush? What can I crush more?
  • The "Critical Friend": Find a colleague to be an "excellence partner" for mutual encouragement.Connect with them weekly for a quick chat. More touches is better than waiting for a monthly connection. Even a quick email is better to keep you focused.
