When Steven, the newly anointed Student Services Advisor at Central Coast College, stepped into his new role in February 2025, he didn’t foresee taking on the responsibility of managing the entire graduation ceremony. With only four months to pull everything together, no graduation event experience, and countless students depending on him, he found himself shouldering a major moment for his community.

Steven worked tirelessly to quickly master event planning. Pulling together loose pieces of a pre-existing graduation playbook, he went to work on every detail - all while holding fast to a tight budget. His nights were often filled with doubts as he worked through the playbook and poured his heart into each decision - from choosing crystal awards to transitioning the ceremony outdoors to include families. He delivered other firsts, such as having the Mayor, CEO, CFO and CAO all attended the event for the first time in school history.
