Looking for ways to unite your students and uplift their spirits during this very unique period of learning? How about hosting a virtual spirit week? There are many creative and fun approaches to planning this exciting event.
Brainstorm Ideas for Your Themes
This can be tough because there are so many choices! Most choices fall into two distinct categories: things students can wear and things students can do during this week.
Decide What Students Will Wear
On certain days, students wear clothing around a specific theme. They can take a pic and post it to a site (#virtualspirit2020). Or they can wear their outfit to their virtual class on Google Meet or Zoom. Here is a list of popular clothing themes: Sports Team Day Pajama and Stuffed Animal Day Crazy Sock Day Flannel Day Dress Like a Book Character Day
Decide What Students Will Do
Students can also have an action to do for a spirit day. They can video themselves doing this action (or snap a pic) and post it to social media. Many students will enjoy having a “mission” on these active spirit days. Teachers can also ask students to share what they have done in their virtual classes with their friends. Some common activity days include: Read a Book Day (Post your current book selection.) Creative Arts Day (Share a project you are creating.) STEM Day (Share a STEM project you are working on.) Fun Day (Share something fun you have been doing.) Game Day (Create a sports challenge or play a game.) These types of activities can offer students some fun distractions in their often repetitive day-to-day lives. Hopefully, these ideas can inspire some movement and creativity.
Advertise Your Spirit Week
Make a splashy document with colorful graphics to describe the chosen theme days. Send an email to students and parents, post the information on social media, and inform the teachers so they can join in the festivities as well. Make sure you prep your hashtags and where you want students to post their spirited pictures and videos.
