Graduation Tam
Our black tam is a high quality velvet hat ideal for college level students and professors. Specifically, this cap is typically used for faculty, PHD and Ed.S graduates. These tams have a plush, lifted top and a soft elastic band to fit your head comfortably. While these caps are flexible, we do offer three sizes to adhere to all head sizes and provide a fitted look.
Each tam is made of a soft, textured velvet with a lofty pile. We offer several variations of our tams with and without tassels. This particular tam has a raised button on the top center to securely attach any of our jumbo college tassels. The tams come in three shapes to meet any school's requirement: 4, 6, or 8 sided.
How Do I Wear my Tam?
- 1. Take your tam out of its packaging and make sure it has the correct number of sides.
- 2. Place the tam on your head. One of the corners should be facing forward bringing a point between your eyes.
- 3. Adjust the top of the tam to have a slight tilt to the right. The top should have a slight puff to it.
- 4. Add your tassel and position it to the left side of your head.
Fun Fact: If the school doesn’t have a preference on the amount of sides, take note of this: Traditionally, all tams were 8 sided. Most tall or large men look best in 8-sided tams. Short and stocky individuals may look better in a 4-sided tam since it is less round looking. Most average sized women and small to average sized men look best in a 6-sided tam, as it is very similar to the 8 sided tam but smaller and less round.

What is a Tam? How is it different than a regular graduation cap?
Tams are high-quality graduation caps used in place of the standard mortarboard. They are made of a high-end black velvet material with a soft poof-like top. The standard mortarboard is a polyester encased cardboard square that sits on top of the head. Mortarboards are traditionally used for primary and secondary school graduations. Tams, on the other hand, are typically used for higher-level graduations such as Ed.S and doctorate ceremonies (occasionally for masters).

What is the difference between a 4 sided, 6 sided, and 8 sided tam?
The different number of sides a tam possesses denotes the level of education the wearer of the tam earned. Four or six sided tams are most often used for Master’s graduates. Often the school decides which should be used, so always double-check before purchasing. Six-sided tams should be used for programs in between Masters and PHD such as Ed.S (education specialist) programs. Eight-sided tams are typically reserved for Doctoral programs.

How do I know which size to choose?
We offer three sizes: Small, Medium, and Large. If you are unsure of your baseball cap size, you will need to measure your head using a tape measure. If you didn’t have a measuring tape on hand, you can use a string to wrap around the head then measure it with a ruler afterward. Tams have a stretchy elastic band that has some give but make sure you choose the size closest to your measurement.

Why do you sell tams with a tassel and some without?
Gold tassels are typically used with tams. However, some schools require their students to wear a tassel that represents their field of study. For this reason, GraduationSource offers a wide range of colors in our jumbo (bullion) tassels that can be purchased separately and added onto the plain tams.
