Deluxe Doctoral Hood

This traditional hood is 46 inches long and designed to be worn with our economy or deluxe doctorate gowns. Our hoods are made of 100% polyester and trimmed with a velvet band to represent your field of study. This hood has a black shell with a definitive sheen and the velvet color is made of a cotton-velveteen blend. The inside of the hood features a beautiful duo-color satin lining and chevron which features your specific school colors. However, you can really customize this hood anyway you or your university prefers. These hoods are ideal for faculty members and PHD graduates. Purchasing a hood with us is a great alternative to renting because they are affordable, can be reused, or saved as a keepsake to be remembered for a lifetime! All of our hoods are unisex and would be considered "one size fits all".

How Do I Wear my Hood?

  • 1. Put the hood over the head, velvet-side up, with the small tapered V-shaped end in front of the neck and the long U-shaped rear draping over the back.
  • 2. Smooth the front of the hood into place so it rests comfortably below the chin and over the shoulders.
  • 3. Secure the front loop to your clothing or gown zipper to keep the hood in place. Use a safety pin if needed to keep hood secure.
  • 4. Enlist the help of a friend or faculty member to adjust the placement on the rear of the hood.
  • 5. Use the fingers to turn out the colors on the back of the hood, starting just below the shoulders and turning the fabric inside-out to expose the lining and chevron underneath. Smooth the base of the rear hood so it lays flat against the back of your robe.

Pair this with our Doctoral Deluxe or Economy Gown!

  • How do I know what type of hood to choose?

The hood you will choose is based on the level of education you are graduating with. A two year degree would be an associate’s shield (if required by your school), a four year degree would be a bachelor’s hood, six year degree would be a master, and PHD would be a doctorate hood. We offer both deluxe and premium versions of each type of hood (not including associates shield). Premium offers a matte finish on the shell of hood while deluxe is a slightly shiny satin.

  • What are the shell, chevron, lining, and velvet on a hood and what does it represent?

These academic hood colors represent important functions based on your education experience. The regalia hood colors typically include four sections: shell fabric, velvet, lining, and chevron. The color of the velvet edge is determined using this our hood degree color chart (http://www.graduationsource.com/media/Hood-Degree-Color-Chart.pdf). That velvet color represents your specific degree or field of study. For example, if you studied business, your velvet color would be Drab. The satin lining and chevron represent your university or college school colors. The shell is the main color and material of hood which is typically black polyester. The fabric shell color matches the fabric color of the graduation gown (usually black) but sometimes is another color depending on the degree-granting institution.

  • What if my school orders with a different company?

Anyone is welcome to order with us! However, we cannot guarantee or be liable for our gown colors matching another company's gowns. We offer unique shades of gowns that will not be identical to another vendor's products.

  • What colors do I choose?

The satin lining and chevron represent your university or college school colors. We recommend contacting your university to confirm this information since it may vary depending on the school. The lining, which is the larger thicker line shows your primary school color and the chevron is the secondary school color in the center area. You should always choose colors based on your highest level of education or current school you are attending.

  • What is the difference between a Bachelor, Master, and Doctorate Hood?

  • What is an associate’s shield?

An associate’s shield is a type of hood that lays flat on the back indicating the student has earned an associate’s degree. The flat design makes the hood easy to position and prevents the age old problem of improper draping of the hood. You only have the option to customize the lining and the chevron as there is no velvet.
