7 Thoughts Every Teacher Has by their First Semester

“How on earth am I going to catch up with my grading?”

Grading homework and tests seems totally manageable at the start of a new school year. By December, though, you may feel a little behind on your duties. This is a totally reasonable thought, given all the other responsibilities that teachers have. With a little planning, you should be able to pace yourself and catch up on marking by next term.

How to Write the Perfect Report Card

“How did the classroom get so chaotic and messy?”

School terms are long. Once you’re in the swing of things, you may neglect to clean up the classroom for a while. If possible, resist the urge to get overwhelmed with all the scattered papers and missing materials. All of it can be replaced. Instead, focus on organizing before term end so that you come back to a spotless classroom in January.

“Finally! Now I can take a breath and rest…”

Teaching can be an exhausting profession. It takes a lot of energy to stand in front of students for hours every day. You do this while keeping them engaged and disciplined, when necessary. Moreover, you’re constantly creating new lesson plans and making adjustments when activities fall short. It’s a highly rewarding job, but even the most talented teachers can burn out by December.

How to Write the Perfect Report Card

“Time to finally get festive and wear some Christmas attire.”

Now that the holiday season is officially here, you can don festive sweaters and decorate the classroom. You may also want to play a few holiday-themed games with your students, or maybe watch a seasonal movie to get into the spirit. Your kids will appreciate having a slightly less stressful schedule at the term end.

How to Write the Perfect Report Card

“Wait…I still have a ton of work to do over the holiday break.”

Ultimately, school term dates are arbitrary if you’re a teacher. You might be on “vacation,” but there will still be papers to grade, lessons to plan, and materials to prepare. We recommend getting as much of this work done before the break. Then, block out a few days during vacation so you can catch up. You should still give yourself plenty of time to rest, be with family, and not think about school for once.
